Orthognathic Surgery and TMJ Surgery — Larry Wolford’s Online Course

An anatomical skull model with the temporomandibular joint highlighted

Planning jaw surgery requires attention to occlusion, the condition of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the airway. These topics come together in the online course “Orthognathic Surgery and TMJ Surgery”. The programme explores surgical techniques, treatment planning and clinical cases.

What the course covers

The course covers seven subject areas:

  • Mandibular and chin surgery — osteotomy techniques, surgical instruments and causes of postoperative relapse.
  • Maxillary surgery — maxillary expansion, virtual planning and nasal breathing.
  • The surgery-first approach — indications, limitations and changes in the position of the occlusal plane.
  • Condylar hyperplasia — assessment of the joint and treatment approaches for different types of the condition.
  • TMJ replacement — surgical techniques, condylar resorption and reactive arthritis.
  • Trauma and craniofacial deformities — discussion of tumours, ankylosis and complex clinical situations.
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea — assessment of airway obstruction and surgical approaches.

The lectures discuss preparation for surgery, technical aspects of the procedures, possible complications and postoperative patient care. Clinical examples complement the discussion of treatment protocols.
