School and Nursery Medical Rooms — Equipment and Historical SanPiN Standards

Medical room equipment for a school or nursery

Medical rooms in schools and nurseries need equipment suited to the care provided and must meet the applicable Russian sanitary requirements. The archived article refers to SanPiN 2.4.2.2821-10 and SanPiN 2.1.3.2630-10. These are historical references, rather than a current compliance checklist.

Rospotrebnadzor confirms that SanPiN 2.1.3.2630-10 ceased to have effect on 1 January 2021. The authority also announced the introduction of SP 2.4.3648-20 for children’s educational and care settings from the same date. The applicable rules and medical service requirements must therefore be checked when planning a room.

What equipment is needed?

The source describes furniture, instruments and devices for school and nursery medical rooms, drawing comparisons with paediatric consulting rooms. The following items preserve its example inventory; they are not presented as the complete current statutory standard:

  • A medicine cabinet.
  • Shelving for documentation.
  • An examination couch.
  • A clinician’s workstation, comprising a desk and chair.
  • Screens for dividing the room into areas.

For assessing children’s physical development, the source lists:

  • A height measure or stadiometer.
  • Scales.
  • A spirometer.
  • A conventional hand-held dynamometer.

The inventory also includes a blood-pressure monitor and stethoscope for clinical assessment, and a vision chart for a school medical room. A chart can support early identification of reduced visual acuity; it cannot identify every eye disorder by itself. The NHS explanation of children’s eye tests describes vision screening and the different examinations used to assess eye health. Equipment and examinations need to be appropriate to the child’s age and the services provided.

Some schools also have specialist rooms, such as a dental room, an ophthalmology room, a treatment room or a vaccination room. The source correctly treats these as having additional service-specific needs. For example, a dental room needs instruments and equipment appropriate to the dentistry undertaken, rather than relying on the general medical-room inventory.

Requirements for medical furniture

The source cites Ministry of Health Order No. 822n when discussing furniture quality. This was the order of 5 November 2013 governing medical care for minors, including during education. It was repealed by Order No. 213n of 14 April 2025, which took effect on 1 September 2025. The replacement order’s scanned text can be read through the Ministry of Justice’s official publication viewer. The source’s furniture recommendations should not be treated as a verbatim description of today’s legal standard.

It recommends a strong, rigid metal frame, usually protected with a powder coating, and describes a margin of structural strength. It also claims that such furniture can last for decades without replacement and that couches and medical tables can withstand extreme conditions. These are unverified durability claims from the archived article. The actual load rating, intended conditions of use, maintenance and need for replacement depend on the product; a claimed strength margin does not authorise exceeding its rated limits.

The source favours seamless synthetic-leather upholstery as an economical, practical surface that is easy to clean. It claims that this covering does not encourage pathogenic microorganisms and retains its appearance after cleaning for years. A smooth, intact covering can assist cleaning, but its material alone does not prevent contamination or guarantee lasting appearance. Products and methods must be compatible with the actual upholstery. The CDC’s environmental cleaning guidance addresses manufacturer instructions and material compatibility.

Economy and practicality are further priorities in the source. It says electrically or hydraulically adjusted furniture is used relatively rarely in schools and nurseries, favouring mechanical designs for routine tasks. Manually adjusted furniture may be suitable for examinations, vaccination appointments and first-aid care where its intended use fits the task; the choice of adjustment system depends on the users and clinical requirements.

The source concludes that selecting furniture meeting the relevant quality standards will ensure successful licensing. Appropriate furniture is one part of preparation, but it cannot guarantee a licence. The premises, staffing, equipment and planned services also need to meet the applicable requirements, and the authorised body makes the licensing decision.
